Diamond Ratios
- by Lilywho Ltd
What is a Diamond Ratio? Beyond the 4 C's of a diamond lies a subtle detail called ratio that matters a lot. The length to width ratio of a diamond influences how a stone looks, how it sits on finger, and how large or small it appears at a glance. Diamond Ratios are crucial for fancy shaped diamonds such as Oval, Emerald, Pears, Marquise, Radiant cuts etc and not round. Round brilliant diamonds are usually cut close to a 1.00 ratio to maintain perfect symmetry. When selecting an elongated shape diamond, much of the focus naturally falls on the 4 Cs. However, mm proportions play an equally important role in defining the diamond’s appearance and without doubt is one of the most influential factors.
The most popular ratio ranges by shape are:
• Oval: 1.35 – 1.50
• Emerald: 1.3 – 1.50
• Pear: 1.45 – 1.65
• Marquise: 1.85 – 2.10
• Radiant: 1.35 – 1.50
How is a diamond ratio calculated? A diamonds ratio is calculated by dividing the length of the stone by its width. The ratio is the diamonds length divided by its width. For example, a diamond measuring 7.5 mm by 5 mm would have a ratio of 1.5.
What is an Oval Diamond Ratio? The most sought after length to width ratio of an oval diamond is generally 1.35-1.5. striking a balance between a rounded shape and an elongated silhouette. An oval diamond with a ratio below 1.30 will appear wider or fatter, while a ratio above 1.50 will appear more slim and skinny. Lower ratios create a squarer, appearance, while higher ratios produce a longer, more slender appearance. There is in fact no perfect ratio, apart from the one that feels right for you and complements your finger.
It is important to recognise that while the length to width ratio defines a diamond’s proportions, it does not determine its sparkle or brilliance. Cut quality remains the most critical factor, as it governs how light is reflected within the stone. A well cut diamond with balanced proportions will achieve the best visual result. At Lilywho we always recommend never dropping below Excellent cut Diamonds.

A diamond’s length-to-width ratio is ultimately a matter of individual taste. At Lilywho we can guide you on your journey and advise what ratio is best for your finger.
However, at the end of the day, it all comes down to what ration you like best on your finger.
